Snehalaya: Snehalaya, meaning ‘Home of Love’, is a profound non-profit organization operating in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India. Founded as a refuge for victims of domestic abuse, sex work, and HIV/AIDS, their English Medium School serves as a beacon of hope. By offering high-quality education and intensive multi-skill development to the children of sex workers, Snehalaya empowers marginalized youth and actively breaks the devastating cycle of second-generation prostitution.
OBJECTIVE
Begaana Pictures collaborated with UK-based T4 Education to lead the production and on-ground shoot of a powerful mini-documentary. The mission was to spotlight Snehalaya’s profound grassroots work as a contender for T4 Education’s Best Community Changemaker and Overcoming Adversity awards. We were entrusted with the sensitive and crucial task of entering one of Asia’s largest red-light districts to authentically document the environment, capturing the truth of the community they serve without compromising on dignity.
THE IDEA
To capture raw, unfiltered reality juxtaposed with transformative hope—demonstrating the profound power of inclusive education. We ventured into the heart of the red-light district to capture real, intimate footage of sex workers who live, work, and fiercely support their families. By combining these grounded realities with moving interviews from the students—who now dream of becoming IAS officers, IPS officers, and software engineers—we aimed to turn a narrative of systemic hardship into a visual masterpiece of resilience.
THE IMPACT
This documentary successfully brought global visibility to Snehalaya’s monumental efforts in ending second-generation prostitution and dismantling the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. The deeply moving footage shed light on the stark realities of the red-light district while showcasing the school as a haven of multi-skill development and familial rehabilitation. The collaboration strengthened T4 Education’s global advocacy for changemaking schools and provided Snehalaya with a premium visual asset to drive international awareness, funding, and inspiration for social good.
